HISTORY
In 1997, Chicago native Robert Rainey founded Nabru. A recent graduate of Western Illinois University with a major in Art and a minor in Graphic Design, found himself unemployed with no professional work experience. Robert discovered this to be the situation for most college graduates during this time. The unemployment rate for African Americans was at 20% with an increasing crime rate. A large number of college graduates were working in areas for which they had not went to school.
Nabru was created as a resource where recent college graduates could use their talents to train, educate and mentor in urban communities. This allowed the individuals to gain valuable work experience while giving back to the community and promoting safer neighborhoods. Nabru partnered with local schools, community organizations, churches, Fraternities and the business community to assist in this mission.
In 2016, Nabru started their annual Father's Day Picnic. This event allows Nabru to give back to the community and raise funds for youth scholarships.
Nabru continues its mission today as they look to change a person’s situation and not their location.
